Architecture of the Garment
Indian monumental architecture is governed by proportion rather than decoration. The arch, the jali screen, the threshold — each is a system of ratios that produces ornament as a by-product of structure.
The Monument collection began with photographs of shadow rather than of buildings. The lattice screen does not describe itself; it describes the light it interrupts. A garment can be conceived the same way: the silhouette is not the object, it is the volume of air the body is given.

Working this way changes the order of the process. Pattern precedes fabric. Proportion precedes surface. Embroidery, when it appears, is placed where a building would place its carving — at the threshold, at the edge, at the point of transition.
